Karpal’s ex-driver bemoans not seeing family for 2 years

Charged for reckless driving, C Selvam says all he wants is to return to his family in India and help them financially.

PETALING JAYA: The former driver to the late Karpal Singh, C Selvam, 29, was in tears as he narrated how much he missed his family back home in India.

As the eldest son, Selvam said he felt hapless as he could not return home to help lessen their financial burdens.

“I just want to return to India and be with my family. It has been over two years since I last met them,” said Selvam, at a press conference at the Nepal Consulate in Perai today.

The press conference was arranged by Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan, who is also the Nepal consul-general in Penang.

Present at the press conference was the consulate secretary, K Prabakaran.

Selvam has been “stranded” in Malaysia since April 17, 2014 after the car he was driving, Karpal’s Toyota Alphard, collided with a lorry on the North-South Expressway near Kampar.

The accident killed Karpal, 74, and the DAP leader’s aide Michael Cornelius, 39, on the spot.
Selvam and Karpal’s third son Ramkarpal Singh escaped with minor injuries.

The Tamil Nadu native is on trial for dangerous and reckless driving.

After Selvam was charged and jailed for over a month, Huan posted bail of RM5,000 and secured his release.

Since then Selvam has been under the care of Huan, who told newsmen he had spent some RM42,000 to date for the Indian national’s accommodation, meals, travelling expenses for court hearings, monthly special pass and passport renewal.

Being an Indian national, Huan said Selvam was not allowed to work pending his case.
This meant he could not send money back home to his family who need at least RM1,000 to RM1,500 monthly to survive in India.

Considering Selvam’s plight, Huan has appealed to generous Malaysians to help the man send money home to his family.

Those who wish to donate for Selvam can contact or WhatsApp Huan at 017-9898468 or Praba at 016-4540096 or 013-3886888.
